One Man's Trash is another Man's...Electricity?

As designers, architects and advocates for sustainability, we're always looking for fresh innovations to introduce to our clients.  And sometimes our clients "wow" us with the innovations they use in their businesses every day.

Clients like Edgeboro International, Inc. (EII), a company that has specialized in environmental construction and landfill / brownfield remediation for the past 50 years.  I recently had the opportunity to work with EII on the renovation of an out-dated energy generation facility to implement new state-of-the-art equipment and to design a safe separation between the equipment and the office / control room spaces.

What I discovered while working on this project is that the specialized "energy generation equipment" in this facility uses the methane gas produced by the landfill waste and transforms it into valuable sources of energy for the production of electricity, heat, or other fuels. Wow, right? Turning trash fumes into energy?! This waste-to-energy technology has been happening in the US since the 1970s and has been a growing trend. Click Here to learn more...
